Q&A: Hugh Adams

British RJ (radio jockey) Hugh Adams rules the airwaves with his new program “Breakfast Waves” on Wave FM 88, soothing Bangkokians with a mix of easy-listening music as they battle the city’s notorious tangle of morning traffic from 5:30-10:00am. Here, Hugh sounds off about his listeners.

How do you like Bangkok?

Bangkok is a fabulous place. It is a blend of the entire East—the sophistication of Singapore and the warmth of Myanmar. It is one of the top five cities in the world that I’ll always remember.

What genre of music appeals most to you?

Everything from classical to Amy Winehouse or Anastasia. Anything that is positive and is well produced gives me energy. I don’t like rap. Slow songs won’t work. I think that radio should be like a friend to wake you up, not put you to bed again.

Has the face of radio changed over the years?

Certainly. It has become so commercialized. Now music is selected by the marketing department and the production manager more than the RJ. The job of the RJ is only to speak and play the music. But I still enjoy doing it.

Is it necessary for a radio jockey to have a good voice?

Absolutely! It is a real skill and experience is a must. Listeners are our target and we have to please them. Therefore “sounding good” is necessary. Another thing besides having a good voice is to know what to talk about; the selection of topics has to be interesting.

What do you think about listeners In Thailand?

Well, listeners in Thailand tend to follow what is in trend. English music has grown over the years as people are keen to taste different kinds of music and the face of society has changed. And yet, I would say that it is still a niche market in Thailand.
