Q&A: Ernesta Dunbar

The Diplomat has a new treat for the summer—Ernesta, who comes from the same family of music as Sly Dunbar. See +music page 25.

Why jazz?

I was raised listening to it. My father Carl Dunbar was a great guitar player and played with musicians like George Benson. My mother was also a singer. I like jazz because it allows more freedom to express yourself and feelings.

Who were your mentors?

My dad, first, then Grover Washington Junior, Gladys Night and Chaka Kan (whom I worked with).

What’s the most challenging thing about performing live?

The show must go on no matter what. Singing a song for the first time can sometimes be challenging but since I have more than 30 years of experience in the business, it’s easier to deal with those trickier situations.

What’s it like performing with other musicians like Teddy Pendergrass?

It’s exciting, very exciting. A unique experience, not only because of their celebrity status but also because of the level of entertainment they deliver.

What has been your most memorable moment?

My first performance when I was five.

What are your future plans?

Recording, teaching, performing, writing and producing. I do these things when I’m not working on a contract.

Where do you like performing the most?

I love Thailand. Everything is here, the public is great and they appreciate music. It’s perfect here, why would I go anywhere else. Sonia Boonchanasukit
