Q&A: DJ Leomeo
Q&A: DJ Leomeo
November 14th, 2007
In Paris, he’s known for his connections with the art and fashion world and for organizing gay parties. From a small bar in the Marais, he eventually graduated to the biggest clubs, like Le Queen on the Champs Elysees. At one point, Leomeo decided to do less organizing and more mixing and the letters DJ got added to his name.
In Paris, you’re Leo the gay party organizer. Here, you’re DJ Leomeo. Which do you prefer?
In Bangkok, Singapore, Shanghai and Manila, it’s true that I’m better known as a DJ. Actually, I’m more comfortable with that. I like the whole vibe here better. I started mixing with Claude Challe, of Buddha Bar and Nirvana Lounge fame. He introduced me to oriental sounds, world music and chill-out music. I like mixing that with North-African or Latin American sounds. Orientalism is my element.
How did you decide to focus on DJ’ing?
I started mixing at home, just for fun, bringing different styles together. My first parties were at Kenzo’s house in Paris. Then I met Claude Challe, and he made me a resident DJ at the Nirvana Lounge.
What are you going to play for your night in Bangkok?
World chill-out music building up towards sensuous party house. I don’t think I have a very defined style. I don’t like to be labeled as house, electro, world or r’n’b… I love everything from the 60s up to now, and I adapt it to whomever I’m mixing for. I’m flexible. I try to surprise people with my musical culture. Right now I’m listening to a lot of 70s and 80s stuff in preparation for my album.
