Q&A: Benni Chawes

Q&A: Benni Chawes

May 9th, 2008

Known for using his vocal cords to produce music that mimics musical instruments, Danish artist Benni Chawes can sing a wailing guitar solo, bass and drum grooves and other percussions. Catch him at the Color Your Life, European Jazz series.

What is it about jazz that inspired you to become a jazz vocalist?

The style is open to improvisation. I am free not only to do whatever solo I like, but I’m allowed to change things as I go along. The style also reflects my life. I don’t stick to one idea; I change. So everything’s alive.

Who are your influences?

My early influences are M. Brecker, Toots Thielemans, Kenny Kirkland, Earth Wind & Fire, Level 42 and UB40. My later influences are Erykah Badu, Donald Fagen, Sting and all the new stuff played on the radio.

Did you receive any training?

I received ear training from age 6-7 and then later on piano, drums and sax. I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston.

What is on your iPod right now?

Jack Johnson, Katie Melua, Jazzmatazz, Norah Jones and some funky stuff.
