Makhamphom believes the world is a stage

The Makhamphom Theater group has been producing community theater for more than 20 years. Born of the 1970s pro-democracy movement, the troupe targets its productions specifically at the communities in which it stages its performances. Makhamphom’s new studio at Pradipat junction opened just two months ago with the aim of bringing the Saphan Kwai community into its fold. “We wanted our first official studio to be in this area.” Makhampom volunteer, Tae, explains. Although our offices have been based here for ages, our team still was not familiar with the people living in the surrounding community.” “We play in other provinces—we even perform internationally—but we don’t know anything about Saphan Kwai. To us, it’s very embarrassing. We need to build a bond between our staff and local people as soon as possible.” Although some may not be familiar with Makhampom, the troupe has performed all over the world (Germany, England, Australia, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan) and is one of Thailand’s leading performing arts groups. They perform not only traditional Thai theater, but they stage contemporary works and organize occasional seminars, exhibitions and workshops. This month the group performs “Mahachanok Never Say Die”, a story about post-tsunami Thailand melded with themes from a famous Buddhist parable. Admission is free. Makhampom Studio (552 Paholyothin Rd., 02-616- 8473. Open daily 1-9pm. www.makhampom.net) has four shows weekly which a new show each month.
