Mighty Mice

January 4th, 2008

They don’t exist, they’re not even people but they’re famous the world over and 2008 is their year.

Mickey Mouse (1982-present)

Walt Disney
Since he began starring in animated films back in 1928, Mickey has become a ubiquitous icon, a logo even, gracing everything from mugs to Carry Bradshaw’s fancy La Belle Dolce Disney couture tees. It’s reached a point where Mickey, like Coca-Cola signs and McDonald’s golden arch, is more of an emblem of evil American imperialism than a cute cartoon character.

Famous Mice

Tom and Jerry (1940-present)

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Jerry took the cat and mouse game to new heights, putting on David vs. Goliath battles of unbridled cruelty that left poor Tom burnt, crushed and depressed. Finally, a cartoon that understood that children love to see pain.

Mighty Mouse (1942-1966)

20th Century Fox
Move over whiny Mickey. Mighty Mouse puts some balls into a superhero spandex outfit just as WWII tears the world apart. Usually found singing, “Here I come to save the day!” Mighty Mouse comes complete with X-ray vision, the power to turn back time, and hypnosis skills.

Speedy Gonzales (1953-1968)

Warner Brothers
To the tune of “Arriba arriba andale andale!” Speedy Gonzales, the world’s fastest rodent, got easy laughs with the racist premise that all Mexicans do is sleep all day. After a 1953 debut in Cat-Tails for Two, 1955 saw him get his own cartoon show featuring Sylvester the Cat.
