Make Your Eyes Shockingly Sparkling This Halloween

photography by Prasit Kongdang

Halloween is just around the corner and you have your costume all figured out. But whether you’ll be the bride of Frankenstein or a slutty catwoman, you’re gonna need good makeup to match. Gone are the days of bloody tears and zombie cheeks: the new trend for Halloween makeup is all about being dark, yet pretty. We sat down with one of MAC’s senior makeup artists, Pornpichit Khumngoen, who gave us the low-down on how to make your eyes stand out from the other undead who will be walking around wobbily this Halloween.

1 Forget the scary look—it’s all about glamour. It’s called “modern classic”, and it’s an adaptation of the smoky eye—just add some colors and sparkles to it.

2 Focus on the liner by making it look more elaborate and graphic than usual. Play with the eyes only and leave the rest of your face clean.

3 Start by applying a silicon-based eye cream. This will help coat the skin around your eyes, protecting them from the makeup as well as making it easier to apply eye shadow.

4  Draw away with an eyeliner pencil (MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil, B700). Beginners should use the pencil kind as it’s easier to draw with. Just start drawing a thick line on your eyelid and overdraw it over the fold of your eyes. Also extend the tail to accentuate the look.
5  Use a flathead brush to even the eyeliner. The brush can also help refine your line.

6 Use liquid eyeliner (MAC Fluidline, B750) and reapply it on the line you have drawn, to coat it so it won’t come off during your night out.

7  Color your eyes with color pigment (MAC Pigment, B990) on to the eyeliner and around the eyelids. Do this by pressing, not brushing, the pigment onto the eyelid. This will help reflect the lights and your eyes will sparkle. Don’t be afraid to play with colors here.

8   For Asian eyes, which are small, applying white eyeliner to the bottom lash line will help make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

Welcome to the Dark Side

Here are some Halloween favorites to make you look shockingly pretty

Cast a spell on your new Halloween date with Lola’s Spellbound (B2,590) kit. This eyeshadow palette also comes with matching lip-gloss so you can carry this all-in-one Halloween helper to the party.

If you love playing with your eyes, try Lola’s Social Eye (B1,390). Its soft creamy color makes it easy to blend your smoky look.

Red Earth’s Magic Line (B590) will come in handy when you need to recreate goth streams of tears in the middle of the night.

Smooching the undead all night can wear out your lips. Best solution is to hang this Anna Sui Mini Rouge (B800) keychain so you have a plentiful supply of bloody lip shades to last the night.

To creep things up, try one of the shades from Anna Sui Limited Edition Nail Color (B950) for your nails and match it with Anna Sui Liquid Eye Color (B650).

Bloom’s Sheer Matte Lipstick (B790) is a great final touch to complete your Halloween look. Not only that, it can moisturize your lips and maintains the color on all night.
