Lomography Stores
November 21st, 2007Dear Mr. KIA: Last night, a bunch of friends and I went to dinner at Pla Dib, and I noticed something really cool on a wall. They have a bunch of photos clipped together, that have wild colors and exciting defects. My friends told me that the photos were taken by a species of toy camera called Lomo. I love photography, but I can never take good photos. My friends said that, with a Lomo camera, mistakes are even encouraged and considered art! I really need to get one: do you know where I can buy a Lomo camera here in Bangkok?—Going Lomo
Dear GL: Have you only now got on the Lomo wagon? Man, you’re so behind. Lomo has been a fad among the indie dek naews for quite some time already. We even have online societies (www.siamlomo. com, www.lomothai.com) and groups dedicated to Bangkok Lomographers. So I shall take this opportunity to welcome you to the wonderful world of no-thinking photography and direct you to the best Lomo outlets in town.
Fotoguffy (208 Soi Chula 50, Pathumwan, 08-1647-7371. Open daily 6-9pm. www.fotoguffy.com) is a small white room full of every bit of Lomography’s awesomeness. Not only can you get the rare Lomo models, it’s also a great place to look for Polaroid cameras and other fascinating toy cameras. The shop owner knows everything you need to know as he’s one of Lomo’s biggest fans. Call ahead before visiting.
Room Interior has a little section at the counter dedicated to Lomo cameras. Their selection is not quite as impressive as Fotoguffy’s, but they do have some good accessories, like camera bags for the Lomos.
TCDC would not fulfill its purpose of being the ultimate art hub if it didn’t have Lomo cameras. Though you won’t find a single book on Lomography in their library, they do sell the cameras in their little souvenir shop. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, and you can get discounts if you’re a member of TCDC.
Manga is where all the “cool kids” shop—or window shop at least, as things are as pricey as at its mother store, Playground! However, the Lomos are not too over the top, plus you get 5% discount if you have a membership at Playground! Store.
