Latino Nights

Latino Nights

January 26th, 2008

Dear Mr. KIA, I don’t know if you remember El Niño (opposite Amarin Plaza) or Taurus, down in Sukhumvit? Those clubs had quality sound systems and fantastic atino music. These days, you can’t find such places anymore. Everywhere we go all we hear is techno or a mix of bad pop played too loud. My friends and I are wondering whatever happened to those people who used to go to Taurus and such? Where do they go now? Is there any place in town that we can go to for nice tunes, enjoy a little dancing and not be confronted with sexpats and their company?—Missing My Latino Tunes

Dear MMLT, Do I remember? Are you kidding? You weren’t even born when I was already a pro salsa dancer. And I know what you mean by wanting to avoid the wrong kind of crowd (Patty’s Fiesta, anyone?). But let me tell you there are plenty of parties every week for the salsa queen in you. You can try to look for J-Lo wannabes at places like Senor Pico. Some of the top clubs in Bangkok also do salsa nights like Bed Supperclub on Wed  and Flava at Dream Hotel, or you could stalk Bangkok-based collective Latinos Sabotaje that throws kickass Latino parties every Thu at Siam@Siam and on an irregular basis at Dream Hotel. They even provide dance lessons to improve your steps if you feel too shy to hit the dancefloor in front of everybody.

But now, let Mr. KIA recommend you something a little bit different that might work for an ex-regular of Taurus and El Niño. Currently big in Europe, Balkan-themed gigs could be the next big thing here. Two events were thrown on the Chao Phya river last year. Check out www.brightears.com for their next party.
