Katsu King, La Romanina, The Rain Tree Café and Le Normandie

More Than Mere Muu Tord

At the four-month-old Katsu King (32/1 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-260-0776. Open Wed-Mon 11:30am-2pm, 5:30-10pm), the deal is easy: pay B220 for a simple tonkatsu or B240 for a deep-fried pork cutlet stuffed with cheese. The prices may seem high for a simple muu tord, but the cutlet is big and non-oily and you are entitled to free refills on rice, miso soup, side dishes and your choice of hot or iced green tea, plus kiwi sorbet for dessert.

Lady of Rome

The French fare at L’Etage and En Bas is gone, replaced by the “continental” (Italian and Spanish, in this case) cuisine of La Romanina (28-28/1, 39 Complex, Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-662-6503. www.laromaninabkk.com. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 5:30-11:30pm). We weren’t particularly impressed on our first (and only) visit, though that was months ago. Or try El Vino wine bar downstairs.

Bubbly Sundays

Sunday brunch at The Rain Tree Café (Plaza Athenee, 61 Wireless Rd., 02-650-8800) now includes a bottle of Laurent Perrier Champagne for every two diners, which at B2,100 per person, is a pretty good deal. Not into bubbly? They also have great seafood and free-flow wines and cocktails. Noon-3pm. The Champagne offer is good through May 31.

Kudos to Kurt

Assuming you haven’t been banned from the premises (a tip: don’t hand out your namecards in plain sight), take your honey to Le Normandie (The Oriental Bangkok, 48 Oriental Ave., 02-659-9000. Open daily noon-2:30pm, 7-10:30pm) for a romantic rendezvous. Through Sep 30, a four-course set dinner at the French restaurant gastronomique is just B2,100, stunning river views included. (Foie gras is an extra B600—but isn’t honey worth it?) That’s not all: Couples also receive a bottle of wine. All prices are net, by the way.
