How To: Avoid Toxic Food
How To: Avoid Toxic Food
November 8th, 2007If the idea of eating your produce topped with chemical sauce freaks you out, here’s how to minimize your risk:
- Raw foods should be washed thoroughly before cooking and/or consumption. Washing in diluted vinegar solution, or a solution of baking soda, then rinsing with clean water will help to remove any chemical residues and also any soil or other foreign matter on the produce.
- Many chemicals applied to crops to protect them from insects and diseases are sprayed onto external surfaces, so peeling the outer layer or skin when preparing fresh fruit and vegetables will remove any surface residues.
- Do not consume berries, leaves or other edible plant material picked from the roadsides or other public areas, as it is impossible to know if these plants have been contaminated with pesticides or other substances and will not be subject to the safety restrictions of designated food crops.
- Aim for a varied diet. Consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables is not only nutritionally sound, but will minimize your exposure to any particular compound.
