Dear Mr. KIA: I love my hair, but I have had enough with having to pay for crappy hairdos. It’s so hard to communicate with hairdressers about the styles I want, and I always end up getting what I DON’T want. So I have decided to take the matters in my own hands—literally. I want to learn how to cut my own hair without making my head look like that of an electrocution victim. —Chopping Spree

Dear CS: Yeah, most hairstylists are too artistic (or narcissistic) to give a damn about what you want. Sometimes the result is so frustrating you might be tempted to throw a wig on top of the whole mess
rather than publicly display your ugly cut. I’ve found some good hairdressing courses that should provide you with the basic skills you’ll need to control your coiffure. Please be informed that Mr. KIA fully expects a free cut in exchange for the wisdom he is about to impart.

Pivot Point Thailand offers a full service hairdressing course—cutting washing and drying. But it will take you about six months to get through it all. If cutting and styling alone will float your boat, try a 1-month comprehensive course. For B40,000 you’ll get all the equipment and textbooks and receive instruction from professionally trained
expatriate Pivot Point employees. Students also get to try out their skills on real people once they think you’re ready.

Ketvadi-Gandini International Hair Dressing Academy is undoubtedly the most well-known beauty school in Thailand. A three week, international standard course will set you back B9,000, and you’ll get to learn the basics of cutting, styling and blow-drying. Equipment is not provided, however, so you have to buy the books, scissors, gowns, etc. with your own cash.

Kornklao Beauty School has a two month intensive course that teaches everything you need to know about styling someone’s hair—cutting, blow-drying, washing, etc. The course is priced at B16,000, but if you don’t have your own tools, you’re going to have shell out an extra B6,000.

Ruengrit School Of Hair Design offers a complete course from the basics of styling to elaborate haircutting techniques—all for B49,000. You get to learn both the practical and theoretical side of hairdressing. (Theoretical hairdressing?) The school provides all equipment.
