Green Bangkok Wi-Fi

Green Bangkok Wi-Fi

July 29th, 2008

The BMA has joined forces with True Wifi to bring us free access at over 15,000 True Hotspots all over the city. Even better is the fact that the network isn’t just limited to buildings; you will be able to keep surfing while strolling down Bangkok’s major streets such as Silom, Sukhumvit and Khao San.

On the downside the government clearly doesn’t want us to spend our time downloading torrents and watching YouTube as the speed of this wifi is limited to only 64kbps—really only good for checking emails and instant messaging, and, even then, quite slowly. Still, it is currently free so we shouldn’t grumble at a service that puts many so-called more developed cities to shame.

To use the service, all you have to do is register for an account using the PIN and Serial No. printed on the back of the Green Bangkok Wi-Fi card. You must register before Sep 2008, and one account is limited to one ID/passport number only. The good news is you’ll get unlimited access for a year until Jun 2009.

Want one? You can pick up the wifi card for free at the information counters of all Bangkok’s leading department stores, including G/F CentralWorld, G/F Siam Center and M/F Siam Paragon. For more information about the service, check out www.truewifi.net or call 02-900-9000.
