Glaz Bar, Gustoso and Umami

Tapas and Teddy

For tiny nibbles, head to Glaz Bar (1/F, Plaza Athenee Bangkok, Wireless Rd., 02-650-8800. Open daily 11am-2am), where a selection of Thai tapas is paired with wines. Feast on grilled chicken satay (B40), grilled marinated lamb chop with port wine reduction (B140) or foie gras mousse with fruit compote (B90/cone). Or take advantage of this sweet deal: a set (B650) that includes nine nibbles, two glasses of Monsoon Valley white shiraz or Laurent Perrier Champagne and a teddy bear. Through Dec 31.

Made in the Mall

Gustoso (7/F, CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Rd., 02-646-1930-1. Open daily 11am-10pm) takes up a big airy space on the seventh floor of the mega mall. There are various seating options, including wooden sofas with colorful cushions on the outdoor terrace. The month-old restaurant is a cousin of Amici, in Siam Paragon; favorites include rocket salad with foie gras and raspberry sauce and seafood risotto with sparkling wine sauce. Appetizers and main dishes are B150-250, house wines by the glass at B280.

Sawasdee! Hei! Konnichiwa!

Umami (43/2 Soi Saswadee [Sukhumvit 31], 02-662-3450) is a Japanese restaurant with a difference. The chef-owner is from the Land of the Rising Sun, but he  owns several restaurants in Norway—both Japanese and French. Plus his wife is Thai. So we’re thinking “fusion,” which is not necessarily a bad thing (Sonie, Jean-Georges Vongerichten). One recommended dish is Sake Mushi Nito King Kani Terriyaki (B470), poached salmon with king crab egg cream millefuille pommes fondant and teriyaki glace. They offer sets at both lunch and dinner.
