The Real Spirit of Giving

SCAD (Soi Cats and Dogs)

Previously known as Soi Dog Rescue, the name of this longstanding organization has just been changed to reflect the inclusion of cats under its responsibilities—namely, to provide better lives for cats and dogs left abandoned. Started in 2002, this non-profit group is run mainly by volunteers and subsists solely on donations and proceeds it gets from its ReTails stores. Inveterate shopaholics can give to charity AND buy stuff like silver jewelry, handbags and even kitchen appliances at the newest ReTails store (G/F, Shop 195/1, Lake Rachada Office Complex, 193-195 Ratchadaphisek Rd., open Tue-Sat 10am-6pm). Those who simply want to give out of the goodness of their hearts can go to www.soidogrescue.org or call Wendy at 081-850-9065.

Computers for Thai Kids

Computers for kids, who can argue with that? In its eight years, this non-profit has sent out more than 436 computers to government schools all over Thailand, trained dozens of Thai teachers, and is helping 59 Thai children stay in school. Cash donations help Pattaya-based organization founder Glenn Holthaus fix up computers donated by old businesses and schools, which are then donated to needy schools and impoverished children. They also help those 59 kids stay in school. To donate, go to www.jeep.htmlplanet.com or call Glenn or Lek at 038-424-998.

SiamCare UK

This British-based organization seeks to help out children affected in some way by HIV/AIDS—either by being afflicted themselves, or by having an afflicted family member. Set up in 1999, it is a UK-registered charity (in case any of you are suspicious grumpy guses worried your money will be spent on Ferraris or Mexican holidays). Its Child Sponsor program puts donations to work by providing financial assistance to sick children and their families. So far, 120 children (31 of them orphans, 10 HIV-positive themselves) have been helped by this program. To make a donation, go to www.siamcare.org.uk or call 02-935-5183.

Greenpeace Southeast Asia

Yes, we’ve all heard of Greenpeace, but how many of us have actually helped this group out? This worthy organization has been around for years and years, railing against environmental degradation and pollution and sometimes irritating people long enough to get exuberant Greenpeacers branded with the term “eco-warrior”. No matter. In this age of global warming, fewer issues are affecting us more deeply. To help out here, go to www.greenpeace.or.th.
