Dear Mr. KIA: I want to make candles!

Dear Mr. Know-It-All: I love candles and I have a huge collection of beautifully scented ones. Now I want to learn to make them myself. Is there a place that offers lessons?—Candle In The Wind

Dear CITW,
from the sound of it, Mr. KIA senses that you are a woman (or a guy who loves wax), and a romantic one at that. Candlelight does add a nice touch to a romantic dinner. But the romantic qualities of candles work even better in your bedroom. Well, putting my fantasies aside, lighting up candles is also good because you can save electricity and money, so it’s a good skill to learn for several reasons. For candle-making lessons, try the following places.

A Chance Learning A one-day class for candle and incense making on Nov 3. It’s a full day course from 9am-4pm and costs B1,910 (materials and lunch included). You have to call them right now so they can reserve a seat for you because there are only 10 seats per course.

Career Development Center You can either choose to learn on a weekday, Mon-Fri 9:30am-2:30pm, or on the weekend, Sat-Sun 9am-3pm. This one-month course will teach you both basic and advanced candle making, and it’s very thorough. You only pay for the materials—the center will provide all the equipment. You can bring five of your friends or more to the center, too, so that you can have a candle-riffic good time with your own gang. After the course is finished, you’ll also receive a certificate.

Pan-pon (149/1 Soi Chareonraj 1, Yannawa. 08-6566-2798. Open daily 9am-9pm.) The two-day course (9am-5pm) will teach you everything you need to know about candle making, and you’ll have about 20 candles at the end of the class. The cost is B2,800 including lunch and materials and the number of students per course won’t exceed five people. This class is pretty small compared to the others, meaning you’ll get the the teacher's full attention and actually learn something.
