Custom-made Shoes

August 22nd, 2008

Dear Mr. KIA, I’m one of those girls who was born with supermodel height and unfortunately feet to match. Thai women have such dainty digits, shoe stores never carry my size (43 European). I’ve checked out all the low and high-end places, but I’m still stuck with my giant feet and no shoes. What I’m walking on these days were either bought abroad or found after days of searching. I can’t afford bi-monthly trips to Paris or Milan, so can you help me fi nd places in Bangkok to get customized shoes?

Dear JW, Well you know what they say about big feet it means a big… oh hang on a minute that just works for guys. By the way check out my size 48’s. Anyway as a man with a large… heart, I sympathize when it comes to the energy you’ve spent hunting down a pair of comfortable platforms. Fortunately, Bangkok does accommodate the oversized so you don’t have to max out your credit card on European trips. Just take a look at my list of stores that offer customized shoes so you too can have happy feet.

Khun Neung’s (1/F, Buasuwan Plaza, Vibhavadi Rd., Vibhavadi Soi 20, 081-804-0909. www.bigsizebyone. com) custom produces shoes in pretty pastel palates or cutesy designs of your choice. Khun Neung herself promises to take on the challenge of making shoes. Order through the online catalog or visit the store. Prices start at an affordable B550 and you have to wait around 15-20 days.

Ballet (2/F, Amarin Plaza, 496-502 Ploenchit Rd., 02- 253-7577) offers comfy alternatives for blistered and tattered feet. They offer chic designs that will keep you à la mode. Prices start at B1,000 and you normally have to wait around 10 days.

Maneesilp (1/F, MBK Center, Phayathai Rd., 02- 620-9484. www.msmfootwear.com) lives up to its established name by offering quality handmade shoes crafted from genuine  leather or classy satin. Check out their online catalog for some samples. Prices start at B2,500, and the average waiting time is about two weeks.
