Cooking Class

July 23rd, 2008

Dear Mr. Know-It-All: Are there any cooking classes or opportunities for kids in Bangkok to take a peek and see what it’s like in a real pro kitchen? My godson is 12 years old and he loves cooking for his family. His dream is to spend a day with a real chef looking over his shoulder. Thai cuisine is preferred. Kind regards.—Achim

Dear Achim: It has been proven that cooking can help kids develop their little brains—you have to remember a lot of stuff, use all your senses, etc. At 12, though, shouldn’t your kid be already washing dishes in a kitchen? A few years of that and he’ll know everything there is to know about making food for others. If you have higher hopes for the munchkin, a cooking class could pave the way to his dream of becoming a chef. But it’s going to cost you.

The Kids Cooking Club at Tessa Terrace (The Moment Studio, A1, Thonglor Soi 13, 02-712-9922. www.tessahomemade.com) promises to provide personal attention and hands-on experience to each lil’ participant with only six students per class. There are a variety of menus from B850-B1,350. For a more complete little chef experience, you can register for five classes and get one class free, plus an apron to boost up your kid’s gastronomic attitude.

Special Saturday Cooking Class at The Amari Watergate (847 Petchburi Rd. 02-653-9000) invites little ones to get their fingers sticky in their kitchen from 3-5pm on the first Saturday of every month. Minimum of six children, but no more than 12, are required for the class to take place. The price starts at B980 per child, which comes with an apron, chef’s hat, chef’s tie, cook book, certificate and refreshments.

The UFM Baking and Cooking School’s (593/29-39 Soi Sukhumvit 33/1, 02-259-0620-30. www. ufmeducation.com) “Kids Can Cook” program is held during school breaks every April and October. Keep logging onto their website for updates. Various menus from Thai food and dessert to baked goods are on offer. B3,800/course.
