CD Stores

Dear Mr. KIA: Since the CD Warehouse chain recently closed down, I’m at a loss as to where to buy my favorite CDs. In which stores can I find a wide selection of CDs with foreign bands and singers? Thanks for your help—Andy

Dear Andy—Bangkok is actually a good place to scavenge for CDs. Whether they are foreign, local, retro, new, or even hard to find club mixes—the streets and dark mall corners have it all! Oh, maybe I shouldn’t be saying that. No, bootlegged CDs don’t exist in Bangkok at all. For your legitimate musical pleasures, these places are a great place to find music from home.

Gram is probably the best alternative to CD Warehouse. You can find lots of international albums, and if what you’re looking for isn’t there, they can place an order for you. There is also a music corner in case you want to sample or freeload.

Do Re Me is famous for its vast collection of music you probably can’t find in big malls. Ask my good friend, the owner, Auntie Know-It-All, who can recommend you anything from The Who’s classics to Madonna’s latest albums.

DJ Siam is also an option if you don’t mind the teeny boppers and underaged dek naews. A great place to catch local indie musicians making an appearance... if you’re into that.

Nong Taprachan (56 Maharat Rd., 02-949-0902/3. www.nongtaprachan.com) is the city’s musical gem where you can also find rare albums of Thai oldies-just in case you wanna to try what the locals are listening to.
