Barhopping RCA (part 1)

Slim/Flix
This decent-sized venue is divided into two starkly different zones that serve different purposes—perfect if you don’t care to hop around too much in one night. Start with some wining and dining in their live music sector and once you’ve got enough in your system, shake it off in the more upbeat hip hop zone. Flix is really for those who love electronic music but they do have a hip hop zone too.
Route 66
Known for its US-mall-like size, Route 66 is split into different zones to suit the tastes of different partygoers: east for hip hop, west for Thai live band music and north and south for everything else. For the girls, the highlight remains the two gentlemen strumming folk music outside the ladies room. For the rest, if you’re planning on scoping out the entire venue, just make sure you have on comfy shoes.
H.O.B.B. (House of Bangkok Bar)
This two-story venue is what you call an all-in-one. It’s got everything you need for a fun night out, from great music (both live and off the records), pool, an outdoor patio for a private small-group hangout and comfy colorful couches for you to give those feet a rest before you hit the dance floor for the 4th time in one night.
808
Replacing what used to be Club Astra, 808 is the newest baby on the block. The club boasts its state-of-the-art lighting/sound system and a pretty intense DJ lineup for the first part of 2008—making it a quick hit among Bangkok’s party people.
Overtone
Judging by the name, you can probably guess that this orange structure on the strip strongly focuses on treble clefs and do, re, me’s. Possibly not the ideal venue if you’re looking to dance the night away, but definitely a fine hangout for those in the mood for live music: jazz, blues, rock and reggae. For those of you looking for your big chance in the spotlight—check out their open mic nights on the weekend.
Old Leng
This ancient establishment has been around for as long as we can remember. It’s a classic traditional Thai house with a stage for bands. The live music consists mostly of Thai songs, not quite as old as the house, but nearly. No hot uni’ kids here but if you want to be among serious adult punters, pull up a chair and enjoy the time travel.
Zeta
Decked out in white and purple, Zeta is solely a chiquita and senorita bar. It’s got it all, from tomboy staff to hot female DJs. So ladies, grab your favorite fruity cocktail and shoot around some balls on their pool table. Sorry gentlemen!
Ratri Samosorn
This compact hangout is usually swamped with regulars and has just enough light for you to “correctly scope the scene.” Keep in mind, the bar plays hosts to a live Thai band, so make sure you’re into men and women who enjoy Thai retro tunes… cause if not, it’s best you look elsewhere down the strip.
