Whisky doesn’t only have to be drunkenly swigged at the club, unappreciated at cheap prices and brimming with chasers. The Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok’s Bar@494 (494 Ratchadamri Rd., 02-254-1234. Open Mon-Sat noon-1am, 5pm-1am) is presenting a Grand Whisky Tasting on May 21. With an assortment of over 30 premium whiskies and single malts from multiple distillers, whisky enthusiasts can swish their drinks alongside canapés for B1,499. Smokers rejoice: no longer do we have to trek outside for a cigarette or cigar break, Divan@494, situated right next to the bar has renovated their smoking room with an improved ventilation system.

Fireplace Grill (InterContinental Bangkok, 973 Ploenchit Rd., 02-656-0444. Open Mon-Fri noon-2:30pm, 6:30-10:30pm), in collaboration with Rubicon Estates, is hosting a 5-course Californian wine dinner (B3,950) on May 16. Having purchased the vineyard in 1975, legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola converted the property to what is now Rubicon Estates. The vineyard’s manager, Larry Stone, the only American to have ever won the title of International Best Sommelier for French wines and spirits, will be there to enlighten you on his precious elixirs. Cocktail reception is at 6:30pm, then dinner at 7:30 pm.

Café On 2 (16 Ratchadaphisek Rd., 02-263-5000. Open 24/7),is offering a special Thai lunch menu at a very reasonable set price of B150. Mainly a spot for businessmen and women to meet and eat, the café serves Thai and international dishes with a Mediterranean slant. Happy Hour (buy one get one free) at the lounge area is from 5:30-7pm.

Need a break from all this booze? Mimy’s (5/12-13 Soi Saladaeng, Silom Rd., 02-636-3136. Mon-Sat 7am-7pm) offers a healthy smoothie called the Tropical Delight (B55), a blend of fruit punch with soymilk. A relaxed atmosphere, with sofas and wifi, the little place offers a plate lunch, chicken teriyaki (B120) and assorted baked goods. They will be getting an ice-cream maker soon, so watch out for that.
