Dear Mr. KIA: I’m going to be in Thailand for two months, and I need a teacher that can tutor me in algebra. It would be nice if he/she could speak English.—Nerd

Dear NS, Seriously, you have two months here and what you want to do is learn algebra? I hope you are planning to do some serious bargaining at JJ with your new skills. Here are some choices from local to foreign teachers.
A.I.M.S. (Advanced Institute Of Multi Studies, 3/F, Bangkok Bank Building, Siam Square Soi 5, 02- 254-9300, www.aims.co.th) was established by graduates from Chulalongkorn University. If you are interested in joining, it is highly recommended that you book your course two weeks in advance. Private classes are also available at B950-1,100 per hour. And yes, they do speak english.
Op-Siam (352/3-4 Siam Square Soi 5, Rama 1Rd., 02-658-4641. www.op-siam.com) provides private algebra courses taught by English-speaking tutors. You can simply grab your own textbook and organize the class with your tutor. A private class is B1200 per hour. If you want to continue your lessons, a full course is at least 20 hours.
Mathnasium (5/F, Union Mall, Lardprao Soi 1, 02-513-0913, 02-5130608, www.mathnasiumthailand. com). As its name suggests, they teach only math and use their own method, insuring your performance by three strategies: evaluate, educate and validate. You have to take a test so that the tutors can customize their lessons and teaching methods to address your weaknesses and build on your strengths. The Regular Comprehensive Program is B13,000, allowing students to take a lesson twice a week for three months.
