2nd Floor, Grand Master Flash, Akon concert, My Bar

Not So Sweaty

We dig the Skytrain Jazz but frankly, climbing 5 stories (that feel like 10) to get a drink is too much work. On your way up, you can now make a pit spot at 2nd Floor, the new bar in the Jo Home Gallery Building, at the corner of Soi Rangnam and Phaya Thai Road.

All Hail the Master

Or not? A hip hop pioneer, creator of the scratch and quite possibly our definition of the ones and twos graced the RCA with his presence at 808 on Jul 26. And, while Bangkokians from every end of the city showed up to pay homage to Grand Master Flash, we can’t be entirely sure they fully understood the message that the founding father of beats and rhymes tried to get across. Result: the audience managed to look utterly confused while partaking in the ceremonial jump-arsound-throw-your-hands-up-in-the-air routine. DJ Nu-Mark took to the same stage roughly two months ago and blew the roof off the joint. Just unfortunate that the grand daddy of this art only lit a small campfire.

The Smack Down

As the two great 21st century philosophers Jay-Z and R Kelly once put it, “After the show it’s the after party and, after the party it’s the hotel lobby.” The Akon concert held at the Centara Grand Convention Center at Central World on Jul 25 followed these instructions to the letter. The Dusit Thani’s My Bar hosted the post-performance festivities at which the Bangkok Invaders lent their skills in the beginning to get the party started. Despite the inflated prices for alcohol, the crowd’s energy and vibe remained elevated for most of the night while a surprise appearance from Akon’s Mohawk rocking DJ Benny-D ended the evening on a high note.
